Is another man's treasure. That's how I felt working in Tallahasee yesterday. I was up there for a one-day event with no (0, zippo, nada) time for birding. I had to be out of the hotel at 8:00 am and spent the entire day at the Florida Forever ceremony at the Capitol. That didn't stop me. I birded about 15 minutes in the morning in the parking area of the Wingate Hotel and next door, then spent about 15 minutes at Myer's Park in the afternoon. Here's is the list. These of course are trash birds to the folks up there, but for a Miami person, they were a refreshing change from the crap we see in our cities. Definitely, I found a treasure:

Wingate Hotel Parking and next door:

White-breasted Nuthatch (about 1/2 dozen)
Ruby-crowned Kinglet (many)
House Finch (many more)
Tufted Titmouse (don't pish!)
Carolina Chickadee (see Tufted Titmouse)
Hermit Thrush several in the open area of the parking
Brown Thrasher (1, lonely guy)
Carolina Wren (in just about every hedge, shrub, weed)

Myer s Park (1 mile from the capitol):

Golden-crowned Kinglet (just 2, darn!)
Red-headed Woodpecker (about 3 or 4, but awesome)
Downy Woodpecker (1)
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker (1, but not far from the Downy)
Red-bellied Woodpecker (same as here)
American Goldfinch (a few, I expected more)
Chipping Sparrow (one, but year bird; I'll take it)
Plus most of the ones seen at Wingate

The Capitol and TNC office:

Orange-crowned Warbler (2)
Red-tailed Hawk (1, right next to old Capitol Bldg.)
Cooper s Hawk (1)

Everywhere:

Cedar Waxwing (hundreds and hundreds)
American Robin (ditto)
Yellow-rumped Warbler (throw a rock and you'll hit one, maybe two)

I'm happy considering I put in a grand total of 30 minutes birding, but disappointed that I couldn't spend a day birding the "good" spots. I trip up there is definitely on my to-do list. I'm back at the office today, and already I've seen several Rock Doves and a Grackle. Yay!!!!
