Until last spring I lived just over the stone walll from the Matheson "nursery'(the nature trails and open areas west of Old Cutler)only 100 yards from the FHP officers' trailer at the end of the paved road. Two years ago one of a pair of pileated woodpeckers chose to become enamored of, or offended at, one of the windows on Hector's trailer, and would perch on the window sill and hammer away for hours at his own reflection. This was particularly annoying to Hector who was pulling a graveyard shift that spring, and the bird was disturbing his efforts to get his daytime sleep. No matter how many times Hector would scare the bird off, or how much his two menacing(but quite tame) German shepards barked, the bird would return and resume his persistent hammering. Eventually the bird departed for parts unknown(though rumor has it it got wind of the Cornell reports, and headed to Arkansas to impersonate that "other" bird)...
At my house we did have one male cardinal that tried the same thing every morning against the glass ofone of our French doors. I was certain he'd damage himself with all the pounding, but he never seemed any worse for the wear. He would let me get withing 3 feet of him before he'd turn his attention elsewhere..
