I believe that picture number three, the one without the crest, was snapped just prior to the grebe submerging. He was very active, and might have lowered his crest before going under. Also, in the Sibley guide, the 1st fall Horned Grebe does have dark cheeks. If this is a Horned Grebe, it would be a first fall, but I am stil leaning towards the Eared Grebe. Also, what is the link to ID frontiers?
