A week's vacation hiking, mammal- and bird watching in the Osa Peninsula of Costa Rica last year, coupled with the acquisition of a digital camera and a revisit this summer, have rekindled my interest in birdwatching. After 15 years of casual observation of birds from our house adjacent to the Matheson nursery(read service road), we downsized in May to a smaller home about 2 miles due east of AD Barnes. In a naive effort to attract hummingbirds to withing range of my lens, I installed(in September) two feeders in the firebushes in our yard(clear liquid,4/1 ratio, changed every few days), only to have them spurned by all the visiting hummers.Indeed the firebushes are completely controlled(9-5 like clockwork) by our resident hummingbird(mug shot attached) who refuses to allow any other birds to feed in the bushes or at the feeders. Can someone suggest the reason why he disdains the feeders in favor of the bromeliads and firebushes? Any ideas how to get him to feed at the feeders? Do I have any chance of attracting other hummingbirds by moving the feeders out of his "turf"?
