Last winter and spring there were lots of Hairys in some of the pinelands in Big Cypress, mainly in burned areas north of I-75 but also down closer to the Tamiami Trail. I've only been down here a year and a half, but my boss said he had never seen that many before in these areas. I recall getting only one on the previous year's surveys.
Still, a better decription would be good. You don't see yellow too often on a Sapsucker, so not seeing any isn't much help on the id. And less than an inch size difference between two species is a useless field mark on a lone bird.
