Flamingos

I've received three recent reports of Flamingos:

Peter Frezza of Tavernier Audubon reported 5 around Snake Bight/Garfield Bight (historic haunts) in Everlgades NP.

Sue Reece of Gulf Coast Ranger Station in Everglades City reported other employees observing three flying overhead and one near Chokoloskee in some shallow backwaters.

Thelma Lawson reported a flock of around 15 flying over "The Stretch" on US 1 between Key Largo and Homestead.

All of these sightings have occurred within the past two weeks or so, and all observers made it clear they were seeing flamingos, not spoonbills.

While we can always debate their current origins (wild vs. captive flocks), bear in mind that large, wild flocks of flamingos (numbering 1000+) occurred in Florida Bay up until the early 19th century.

Keep your eyes peeled!
