I am deeply saddened by Juan's passing. He was not only a great birder, he was a better friend to all around him, with a seemingly infinite capacity for selflessness.
One time, back in the late 80's, when many of us were on our bellies in the thick pre-Andrew brush at Cape Florida looking for a reported Key West Quail Dove, Juan gave up his own fleeting look to make sure I saw the bird. He knew it was a lifer for me, and he dropped his glasses to describe exactly where I could find it when it popped into view for a brief moment.
Juan also used to take the time to phone me personally whenever a local rarity was found. Again, he would take whatever time was necessary to make sure I knew exactly where to find it.
Juan was absolutely the best, and I am sure none of us who knew him will ever forget his kindness and humility.
