It probably was an unusually dull redstart, especially since the body shape seemed redstart'ish. The amount of yellow on the wings, tail and sides can be incredibly variable both in extent and color. I would think a redstart/Nashville hybrid would have some yellow below, and a shorter tail. That acturally sounds like a strange hybrid, but not as weird as a Blackpoll-Northern waterthrush hybrid mentioned in Dunn/Garrett's Warblers guide.
