Thanks for elaborating a bit on your sighting. With your emphasis on the size of this bird, I think we might be able to rule out Cuban Emerald as a possibility. The two most current and authoritative books on NA hummingbird identification (Howell and Williamson) both refer to this species as a small hummingbird as their first note on the ID. The size range listed is 3.5 to 4.2 inches for Cuban Emerald, whereas Ruby-throated Hummingbird is listed as 3.2-3.75 inches. Hardly an "incredible" difference, certainly shouldn't ever appear to be a 2X difference. Now the question is, what possible species could this have been? Anybody have any thoughts?
