Never conceived of having of having the sighting published -in fact, I didn't report it - someone else did without my knowledge. I am not in the habit of reporting accidentals while a few thousand miles away from my own zip code!
A ruby-throated was just a few feet away on the wire for comparison. The hummer in question was sparrow-sized, which caught my attention. The size difference was incredible, seemingly double. At least 4.5 inches if not 5. Maybe a ruby-throat on steroids. Just thought it was possible - especially since I had seen an Emerald before.
But I do have a question - if it has never been seen in the US, why is it listed as an accidental and why does it have a tick box in several field guides for US/Florida birds? Being a 'foreigner' I then thought it was a possibility. Without that info, I would never have mentioned it in passing to another birder.
Confusing. Hope this has not caused undo fuss.
Good birding
