Hi Paddy- the amazing thing about hummers is that the feathers look different depending on the angle that you are viewing them( it's an optical effect). Of course, the males have more color than the females.
MY guess is that this possibly could have been a rufous, but it all depends on the angle that you were viewing it.
I remember seeing Anna's and Costa's in California and the gorget ( the underside neck feathers) could look extremely purple or pink (depending on which one it was of these 2), or it could look sort of dark. Supposedly one of the things the males do is to flash this to other males...or even the females look for the colors.
whatever, sure wish one of these little hummers would come to MY back yard.
Any one else out there think this was perhaps not a ruby throat?
