Do you mean at the very end of the Research Road, where there's a locked gate and some derelict buildings? I never noticed a canal there before.
That's so cool that you saw a bear! -- though thank God it wasn't me, 'cause I'm scared to death of bears :) I'm often in that area to look at the beautiful deer. I keep hoping to spot a panther; no luck so far.
