I don't know if this is unusual or not, but a few weeks ago I was startled to see a young hawk sitting on a telephone line on SW 86th St in Dadeland. The only hawks I'd seen in this area before were a few ospreys near the canal behind Dadeland Mall.
This hawk was dark and had white streaking on its breast. At first (because of the streaking) I thought it was a snail kite, but this bird sat up taller -- it had a leaner body shape. I got as close as I could to see better, and the hawk wasn't scared away. From looking at a bird book, the closest guess I can come up with is maybe a broad-winged hawk, but I really don't know.
