LArge numbers of nighthawks mixed in with swallows circled over Hoechoka Hammock in North Broward Thursday evening at 5:30. The number of nighthawks estimated at 40-50 and the number of swallows about 30 as best could be determined. A strong thunderstorm was northwest of the area. The nighthawks were silent and some ascended to heights where they became almost invisible unless you stayed fixed on watching one. The swallows were very low often skimming right over my head. The aerial display lasted about 30 minutes and the feeding "pod" (?) moved slowly southward. An unusual first time experience for me and pure poetry to watch. The mix of nighthawks and swallows was so intense in the center it reminded me of WW II airplanes in a dogfight or maybe Luke Skywalker space combat with the Dark Force. Makes me wonder: Do birds crash into one another on occasion?
