Rock, Trey, his son Josh, and I took advantage of smooth seas this morning and did a quick trip "around the block." After getting two immature Brown Boobies at Fowey Light, we headed out to an empty ocean. Where were the birds? It wasn't till we were in 800 feet of water that we saw our first Sooty Tern. We later found a couple of Bridled Terns and a Band-rumped Storm Petrel. Since the seas were calm, we headed deeper in search of birds. At 20 miles out, Rock calls out "There she blows!" Sure enough, we had found a Sperm Whale. A little farther south from this whale was another Sperm Whale, both heading south. We got really close to one of them so Trey could take photos. Then Rock yells out "Harpoon!" Arrgh! I left me harpoon at home maty. After we had some shots (photos, of course), we left them to go on their way. We later found another Band-rumped Storm Petrel and a few more terns, but overall the birds were the slowest I've seen this year. That happens, but at least the whales were an exciting find. Anybody know the link to post to the Whale Board?
