Hi Nancy-
Considering the bird that I found this morning ( a young shrike with a broken wing that I took to the wildlife guy and was therefore late to work!). My guess is the fledgling male may have just gotten injured. When they are first learning to fly, they may not be able to judge distance or landing that well and not "open the landing gear" when they should.
By the way, how did you know Mrs Red had 2 different mates? Just curious.
