I've seen coontie come back strong after being completely topped by fire, freezing, and Atala caterpillars. Sandy Koi does a fascinating program on the history of the over exploitation of the once abundant coontie in Broward County for a flour made from its root and the apparent extirpation and return of the Atala to South Florida.
