The Atala tends to be a boom and bust species sometimes multiplying until its immediate food source is depleted. Fortunately its primary host plant, Coontie (Zamia pumila) has considerable reserves in its large starchy taproot and can easily recover from complete defoliation. If a lush growth of Coontie is preferred over Atalas the application of Bacillus thuringiensis should provide a non-chemical solution.
