Definitely Screechers. We've had them for years in Loxahatchee- we searched web and got dimensions and directions and have been adding boxes each year to our yard- we have 3 different sets that have nested here the last 2 years that we have carefully watched and documented. 2 red screechers and 1 grey one. This year we had 4 babies by the red one, 3 by the grey one, and we still have 1 red one left nesting in one of our northern flicker boxes and has 2 babies that are about ready to leave (she seems to be the last to arrive each year). Not sure why- but that's the second year in a row she has chosen that box much to the flicker's dismay even tho we built her a box too. The screechers are about 6 inches- very small and the babies look like bobbleheads when they first pop their heads up. The parents will land all around you in the yard when feeding- just don't get too close when there are owlettes out and about and also in box as they are VERY adept at protecting their kids. They love boxes and will come back every year. There's a great site to watch starting in about March- still can go there and look back- the guy in Texas has a box with cameras and updates it daily- fun to watch them grow. It's http://gargravarr.cc.utexas.edu/owl/
Enjoy the screechers and hopefully you can build and put them up a box next year as they will surely love it and come visit you yearly.
