Toe asked me last week if I wanted to go with him this morning to Key Largo,
but I couldn't go with him because I had to take my kids to school. I told him I
would call him after I dropped them off to see if it was still worth the trip
down. I really wanted to go out birding this morning. I just purchase a new
camera (Canon 30D) and wanted to put it to work. My old camera is just about
worn out. I'm going to send it in to the factory for an overhaul.
Any way I dropped my kids at school and I called Toe, then just as I began to
speak with him I spotted an Ani on the power-lines just a couple of blocks from
my kids school. I saw the Ani one block west of Christ Fellowship on south side
of 168th Street. I was in school traffic and couldn't easily stop or pull over.
The bird flew east just moments after I saw it. The location is very near the
last sighting.
I then proceeded to Key Largo to look for a Mangrove Cuckoo. I took my time
going down thinking Toe would have already have gone before I got there. I
stopped at some of the usual spots along the way but didn't see much, only a few
warblers and vireos. Red-eyed Vireo, Black Whiskered Vireo, Black Poll, Cape May
and a Prairie. I arrived at the Botanical Gardens at 9:45 and saw Toe's car and
called him to see where he was. He was at the end of the road on the Nature
Trail and he told me they were hearing a couple of Mangrove Cuckoos, so I walked
quickly and within 30 seconds of laying my eyes on them, Toe begins pointing up
in the tree just in front of him. There it was my "Life" Mangrove Cuckoo...
Perfect Timing...
On the way back home Toe called me and said he found a nice male Yellow
Warbler at the Toll Booth, so I stopped there and looked for about 30 minutes
before I found my "year" Yellow Warbler.
Thanks Toe!
