Here is a photo from online of what I saw. The only difference is that the bird I saw may have had a little more yellow on the upper flanks.
Maybe the light and location made the colors contrast more when I was observing. I stated what I saw. This photo shows a female Townsend's that appears to have black on its back to me. The yellow showed because the bird was bending down and twisting to reach some insect or fruit or something from another branch. In other words the darker feathers shifted reveling yellow beneath.
