Generally, the birds that are referred to as conures are similar to macaws in appearance ( hence the one genus, " Aratinga"), because of the white ring around their eyes and the long tail. But true, the common names are just that, too broad. This book does list all of the types of birds generally referred to as "parakeets" including many from Australia, S. America, and Asia.
Part of the reason, I am so tuned to this is that there are certain parakeets that make very good pets, and quiet , like the "conure" that I have, the Pyhurra genus, and certain ones that will blow your eardrums, many of the Aratingas( like the sun"conures").
Then again, look at the name " nighthawk"- they come out in the day and night and are certainly not hawks!
