i've never actually killed starlings, but i'm daydreamed about it often. one alternative: wait until they might have eggs, and dispose of the eggs. also, woodpeckers prefer a "stuffed" box full of woodchips or aspenwood shavings (available at pet store; do NOT use pine or cedar, as they irritate baby birds' skin). i know it's a chore climbing a ladder to open up the boxes to scare away starlings, but it works better. another alternative is to employ a "supersoaker" watergun to blast the starlings repeatedly until they get the message that your nestbox is "reserved" ... good luck! :) -ken
