As some of you may know from previous posts, I've had a woodpecker nestbox up for several years but, unfortunately, no takers. Well, yesterday(3/4/06), my son and I put up a new, larger nestbox hoping this one will attract woodpeckers. Early this morning as I sat by the window, to my surprise, a starling popped it's head out! It came and went several times and even entered the old nestbox. I managed to scare it away most of the morning. While the starling was gone a woodpecker stopped by, went inside, and started house cleaning. haven't seen it for a little while though. Less than 24 hours and two different species of birds in the nestbox! My question...what's the consensus of the birdboard if, as a last resort, I have to bring out the ole Red Ryder B-B gun to take care of business with the starlings? I'm a bird lover but would much rather provide our native woodpeckers a nesting site than non-native starlings. All comments welcome.
