The NOAA numbers have various problems. The fact that most of the globe is very sparsely covered. There s also typically a lot of missing data in the early reports (revised eventually). Data from satellites in polar orbit doesn t have these problems, but only goes back to the late 1970 s. I think the processing of the satellite data has also been much better vetted by independent researchers than the NOAA processing.

There are two versions of the satellite data, but they are pretty similar. These are the UAH (Huntsville) lower troposphere numbers and are quoted relative to the 1981-2010 average. The first number is in degrees C, the second in the more familiar degrees F. I picked two years in which all three months (Jan, Feb, Mar) were hotter than 2015, but there were some other years where one or more was hotter. As you can see, the first 3 months of 2015 were not even close to being record breakers as far as the satellite data is concerned. For at least 2 of those months 2015 is no higher than 4th (I didn t compare all the years).

2015
Jan 0.351 0.632
Feb 0.296 0.533
Mar 0.256 0.461

2010
Jan 0.557 1.003
Feb 0.537 0.967
Mar 0.567 1.021

1998
Jan 0.471 0.848
Feb 0.651 1.172
Mar 0.421 0.758
