A Pileated Woodpecker was in Bill Baggs Cape Florida SP this morning - an unusual sighting for the park. Even the "locals" were curious. Interestingly, both Ft. Zach and Cape Florida are on the ocean and directly in line with birds moving northward from Caribbean areas. While not considered migratory (I can't find any literature supporting this possibility), it's curious that these birds are showing up in similar locations during spring migration. Perhaps it's only a coincidence? Red-headed Woodpeckers have shown up in the Dry Tortugas and on Elliot Key during spring so maybe woodpeckers tend to wander this time of year.
