We've all seen Audubon prints our whole lives, and after a while they seem a bit bland and some of them even weird. The chance to see the real thing up close and personal (they even lend you a magnifying glass) might lead you to see Audubon differently. Forget the crazy positions. He got so much of the details exactly right. The banding pattern of a Whip-poor-will's wing. The slight bulbousness of the tip of a Semipalmated Sandpiper's bill. You can't see this stuff in a book. And how the engraver, Havell, understood these birds that he never even saw is a wonder.
