As the New York Historical Society, New York City, readies for the third installment of the tripartite series Audubon s Aviary: The Complete Flock that shows from 6 March through 10 May 2015, an almost equally important show is taking place in Florida, in Miami. The New York Historical Society owns Audubon s original paintings used by Robert Havell to make the aquatint engravings for Audubon s Birds of America. For the FIRST TIME ANYWHERE EVER, the NYHS has/is displaying ALL of Audubon s extant artwork for the Birds of America, and then some. The exhibit began in 2013 with the first 125 paintings used for the Birds of America were displayed; last year the second 125 were on exhibit, and this year the last of the paintings will be shown. His paintings were not made to sell, but to use exclusively for the production of the engravings and his hand-written notes appear on many of the pieces. I think most people are surprised at what a master Audubon was-his detail is phenomenal.

Now for the FIRST TIME ANYWHERE, HistoryMiami, affiliated with the Smithsonian, is displaying all of the aquatint engravings from the Birds of America; these aren t the small ones, they are the huge double-elephant folio aquatint engravings, each hand colored. Since this special event is in our backyards, you may want to take advantage of the opportunity to see what a master engraver Robert Havell was, and how faithfully he reproduced Audubon s original artwork. The show began 27 February 2015 through 31 MAy. Below is a detailed account of the exhibit:

There is an admission fee to each venue; the amounts are posted on the above websites. However, I have checked and both are not for profit organizations.
Happy viewing
