Birders may be interested in the new hiking/nature trail in the southwest corner of the Florida Panther NWR. There is an information kiosk at the beginning of the trail and future plans call for things like a "tower compound", etc. The trail goes thru several different types of habitat like sawgrass prairie, pine flatwoods, ponds. marshes, etc. It is accessible to the public right now. It is right off of the entrance to I-75 at SR29. For further info, go to:

There were also a few Hairys in the Florida Panther Refuge, but I don't think folks can get in there.

: : QUESTION-the recently published South Florida Birding Trail Guide stated that the Picayune Strand was the southern most habitat of the Red-cockaded Woodpecker. Is this true and if it is where can they be located at? I tracked down a colony once in Corbett a long time ago in a similar habitat.
