Actually, there are RCW clusters further south of the Picayune Strand in the Big Cypress National Preserve. Contact wildlife biologist Deborah Jansen for more info. There is at least one accessible cluster in the Picayune Strand as well.


: I did a Management Plan review for Picuyane Strand a couple years ago and part of that process involved a field trip to the various habitats. I remember having to go on a half-track vehicle to the northwest section of Picayne, a few miles south of I-75, over some pretty inaccessible ground. The staff leading the trip explained that just west of us were the areas with RCW clusters. I never got close enough to actually see them, but they are there. I don't think this area is within reach of most birders, including myself. I don't have the actual plan with me now, but I'll take a look when I get back to the office and if I see a way in to that location I'll let you know. Otherwise, you can always contact the Picayne staff directly and they might give you up-to-date locations. Hope this helps.
