Although today's blustery and cool weather was not ideal for birding, sometimes you have to make do with what you get.

The spreader canal on the east side of Aerojet Road at Lucky Hammock is gradually drying out, revealing a network of muddy puddles. These puddles usually attract a small assortment of shorebirds in late winter and spring. They are always worth a quick check. The Solitary Sandpiper found during the GBBC was still there along with both Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs as well as Least Sandpiper.

Hiking north along the L31-W Canal, I saw and photographed one of the continuing Tropical Kingbirds near the first water control structure where the trail bends abruptly to the left (west). Continuing onward, I photographed the continuing female Vermilion Flycatcher at the point where the trail bends abruptly to the right (north). At the second water control structure at the end of the trail, I observed the second Tropical Kingbird.

Tree Swallows were out in force today, with small numbers of both Cave and Northern Rough-winged Swallow mixed in.
