The most reliable spot for Snail Kites is about a quarter of a mile west of Shark Valley entrance, past the resturant on the north side of the road. There is an abandoned airboat ride place, yellow in color. I have seen them there many times eating snails at the small cypress very close to the canal. Anywhere north of US 41 on your way to Shark Valley can also produce Snail Kites. The Water Management Area next to Markham Park in western Broward County is reliable, but not as good as Shark Valley area. Walk along the canal up to the dike and look out over the open sawgrass. Markham Park is just north of I-595/75. Exit off of the highway at 136th ave and keeping west to park. The canal is right on the old State road 84. With hurricane damage you can't take the nature trail out to the dike, you must walk along the canal. Good Luck. Paddy
: I will be traveling to south Florida--Miami area--in two weeks. The primary target bird is Snail Kite and I would be grateful if anyone can provide me with advice on the most dependable locations to see them within a couple of hours of Miami. Also, are there currently any Caribbean rarities being seen like Lasagra's Flycatcher or Western Spindalis?
: Thanks for any advice.
