Most thieves are opportunists. Give them an easy target and they can't help themselves. Another good tip is to look around as you pull into a parking area. Are there any occupied vehicles nearby (I've written down their tag numbers) or person/persons standing nearby? It's a crazy world out there and nothing can be taken for granted.

On a side note - My brother was a long-time base inspector while in the Air Force. There was one place in the world where military personnel just left their cars unlocked (with nothing in it, of course), because if they didn't someone would often have broken a window to get inside and look around. They got tired of having to always pay for replacement car windows.

Sorry about your loss.
