It takes persistent cold weather to lower the water temperature of a large body of water like Biscayne Bay. The freeze of 2009/10 had nearly 2 weeks of well below 50 degree weather that eventually lowered the water temperature to below tolerable levels for all the snook, tarpon and bonefish that expired in the Bay and in the Evergladfes watershed.At the same time, however on the outside of Elliott Key, even in shallow water,where the ocean and the Gulf Stream eddies kept things warmer, the water temperature stayed higher, and fewer fish suffered from the cold.
