I had a good-sized black buteo with whitish primaries/secondaries over Dagny Johnson in Key Largo a week ago. I initially confused it for a Turkey Vulture. I was thinking it might be a very dark dark phase Swainson's Hawk and didn't even think of Zone-tailed Hawk until I was driving home. After reviewing the books I was certain it was not a Swainson's Hawk but figured Zone-tailed was too far out there to even mention to people without a more definitive ID. After seeing this post, I thought it was worth mentioning.
