Flying things other than birds

This morning I went out to catch a glimpse of the lunar eclipse, but the clouds were too thick to the west. I did see a bat flying around, and was wondering what species would be around here this time of year. The bat was not too large, but not tiny either. I'd say the wingspan was about 10"-12". Could not make out any other detail in the low light.
