As a warm up to next month’s South Florida Bird Festival (Check our calendar of events October 1-4), Twenty or so birders joined me Saturday for a beautiful warm morning bird walk at Fairchild Tropical Botanical Garden. We later joined the Fairchild Volunteers for a breakfast hosted by FTBG and a Birding lecture given by our own Brian Rapoza We gathered at the Visitors Center and made our way to the water’s edge where we had a Green Heron across the lake. We continued along the Arboretum loop of the Kushlan Bird Trail where the highlights were a Worm-eating Warbler that was spotted by only a few, A Black-and-White Warbler low in the branches and an active group of Ovenbirds. We made our way along the Lowland loop for a short distance where we found some activity and a good group of warblers, Louisiana Waterthrush, Prairie, Black-throated Blue and Worm-eating Warblers. We heard the rattle of a Belted Kingfisher as it flew across the lake. This lead to the spotting of a low flying Short-tailed Hawk. We called it a day at that time in order to catch Brian’s Birding 101 Lecture to the Fairchild Volunteers. A wonderful breakfast was offered while we enjoyed Brian’s excellent lecture in air conditioned comfort. I want to thank all who attended and also want to thank Gaby who always makes us feel like VIP's each time we visit the Garden.
