After reviewing, I think I was totally wrong—the “mature” example had very dark striping, but higher up on the chest than the field guide shows. I don’t know what to make of the size difference; we had multiple looks from c. 20’, sometimes with (seemingly) both species in the same bin view. Sorry to anyone chasing it, but at least I hope you got the Whimbrel.
