Vulture Tagging and Tracking Program
Everglades National Park has been cooperating with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) in a study of vultures in the southeast, especially Florida. Previously, and with the help of park staff and volunteers, the USDA placed uniquely coded pink wing tags on more than 140 black vultures. Three of these birds also received a satellite tag, strapped to the bird like a cell phone sized backpack, that provides daily location coordinates. Two of the satellite-tagged birds are still alive and continue to transmit locations. So that we can better learn about the movements and habits of these vultures, we are again requesting your help. The link below provides information on the study and instructions on how to report a sighting of a tagged vulture. Please print, post, and distribute as you see fit. Please feel free to distribute to others (such as cooperators, repeat visitors, nature photographers, the birding public, etc.) that you think might be out and about and likely to see a tagged vulture.
