The Dade County Christmas Bird Count takes place on Saturday, December 17. Assistance is needed for the following areas: Sadowski Critical Wildlife Area: This closed-to-the-public area on the north side of Virginia Key will be surveyed by kayak. Birders who volunteer for this assignment must be proficient kayakers, supply their own kayak and be able to accurately identify waterbirds. To volunteer, contact Laura Eldredge, Environmental Programs Coordinator, Biscayne Bay Aquatic Preserves (Florida Department of Environmental Protection) at Laura.Eldredge@dep.state.fl.us or (305) 795-3485. Oleta River State Park: The park will be covered on foot. To volunteer, contact Elizabeth Golden at Elizabeth.Golden@dep.state.fl.us Opa-Locka: Areas in need of coverage include Amelia Earhart Park and Opa-Locka Airport. To volunteer, contact me directly at field trips@tropicalaudubon.org. Other party leaders for this CBC who are seeking assistance for their assigned areas are encouraged to post requests for assistance here. Finally, any backyard birders living within the CBC circle are encouraged to submit sightings from your yard or neighborhood on count day. The CBC circle covers most (but not all) of urban Miami-Dade County north of Coconut Grove. Feel free to ask if you have questions or if you're unsure if you live within the CBC circle.
