I had the fun of taking Olaf Danielson who is doing a "Big Year" for a day of birding in the keys yesterday. It was a beautiful day with wonderful blue skies. We had hoped for a rarity which we may, or may not have found. We had a pretty good day list with a steady stream of raptors and swallows throughout the day. You can check out Olaf's blog about his adventures here: http://olafsbigyear.blogspot.com/ Here are some of the birds seen: BELL'S VIREO found on the east end of Cary's Fort Circle, Key Largo excellent views. Philadelphia Vireo at Dagny Johnson in Key Largo. Yellow-throated Vireo White-eyed Vireo NASHVILLE WARBLER, Cary's Fort Circle, south side near old 906. Northern Parula Cape May Warbler Black-throated Blue Warbler Black-throated Green Warbler Palm Warbler Yellow-throated Warbler Prairie Warbler Blackpoll Black-and-white Warbler American Redstart Worm-eating Warbler Ovenbird Northern Waterthrush Common Yellowthroat Gray Kingbird Eastern Kingbird, both birds are late. Lots of raptors: Turkey Vulture Osprey Mississippi Kite, five seen I only saw four! Northern Harrier Sharp-shinned Hawk Broad-winged Hawk Red-shouldered Hawk Short-tailed Hawk American Kestrel Merlin Peregrine Falcon Not a bad day of birding in beautiful weather.
