Hi Steven, The June Challenge isn't formally sponsored by anyone -- it was started about 10 years ago in Gainesville to encourage birders to keep birding in June, and has since spread to other areas (something we up here are quite proud of!) The challenge is individual -- to see who can see the most species within a county during the month of June. The competition, while potentially brutal, is also a friendly one -- if you see something cool, you're supposed to let everyone else know so they can go after it too. Thus, the counties aren't competing against each other -- the contest is to see which birder in each county reigns supreme. Have fun!
