I thought it was weird that last year there was only really one large flock at Kendale Lakes park and a few other sightings around Miami-Dade and this year they are everywhere so I looked at the e-bird data and there's a pattern of a larger amount of waxwings being reported every other year (even years). 2018, 2016, 2014, 2012 and 2010 all have more observations than 2017, 2015, 2014 and so on. See here (use zoom): https://www.flickr.com/photos/joemdo/40943892011/in/datetaken-public/ I don't know if it coincides with anything (a tree giving fruit only once every other year or el-nino/la nina or who knows what) or if it's just a coincidence but maybe next winter they'll be scarce and then in 2020 they'll be back like this year?
