I don't know if our weather gets cold enough to boost the standard nectar that we offer wintering hummingbirds. When South Carolina's first state record of Calliope Hummingbird wintered in Greer from December-April, 2000, this concoction is what the hosts fed the bird, using a heat lamp. Dr. Webb is a pathologist and analyzed the droppings to make sure the bird was getting enough protein. They placed a heating pad in a wrought iron plant holder lined with palm matting and the bird roosted there every night. He was banded and returned the following winter. I guess the 5-star treatment was to his liking.
