A buddy of mine and I spent the afternoon and evening fishing and herping in various parts of Homestead and around Everglades National Park. We stopped to fish just outside of the Chekika unit of Everglades National Park. Right at the very end of SW 168 Street as you head west from Krome Avenue, you can turn south onto SW 237 Avenue. Just beyond the two defunct buildings is a stand of Brazilian Red Peppers. There were two Alder Flycatchers giving their "pep" calls around 7:30 pm. A number of other migrants here included Barn and Cliff Swallows, Yellow and Prairie Warblers and both waterthrushes. Just farther south down SW 237 was a FOS Northern Harrier.

Herps seen on a rather slow night included Everglades Racer, Peninsula Ribbon Snake, three species of water snakes, a Corn Snake, Scarlet Snake, Florida Cottonmouth. A Coral Snake found hit on the road would have certainly been the highlight if it would have been alive.
