If you are still in the Homestead area, I have also seen them at the Walmart fence right on the turnpike.
Another area were they are spotted is in the area near the Kapok Tree/Long Key Natural Area in western Broward. I have seen them on the fence and bushes along the canal and Bryant R. has seen them on the east side of Flamingo Road, north of Flamingo Gardens in the plant nurseries. Take I-595 to Flamingo Road, go south until you see Flamingo Gardens. The natural area is to the west and nurseries to the north. The flock must be in the area.
If you are searching near the Ft. Laderdale airport also try 29/30th Ave. south of State Road 84, west of I-95, I have seen them there too.
I always hear them before I see them. They have a Starling like eerie rollercoaster sound, rising up and them go back down. Always small flocks and low in the bushes. Look for the tail that looks broken on a Boat-tailed Grackle. Good Luck, they are hard to find.
: I haven't had any luck locating Smooth-billed Anis near the Homestead Outlet Mall. Can anyone provide an alternate location likely to have them, or tips on refining my search technique? I am pretty clear on the visuals, but have only read descriptions of their song. I have been there morning, noon, and near sunset with the same negative results. Thanks.
