Arthur & Anne Wilson, Georgia Nef and I birded these locations among others on Friday, 02/10/2006. At Kirby Storter boardwalk on US Rte 41 (Collier County) in the Big Cypress Nat'l Preserve we had great views of two Magnolia Warblers, a male Black-throated Green, at least two Northern Waterthrush, Black-and-White Warbler, Yellow-throated Warbler plus Common Yellowthroat, Palm and Yellow-rumped. An unexpected Wild Turkey was sitting preening in a tree at the end of the observation platform, a first for me at this location. Eastern Bluebirds "showed well" near the driveway/exit onto US Rte. 41. Other birds seen or heard there were Pileated, Downy & Red-bellied Woodpeckers, White-eyed Vireo, Tufted Titmouse, Eastern Phoebe & Great Crested Flycatcher.
Afterwards, we birded the Loop Rd. At Sweetwater Strand we had another Magnolia Warbler & two Black-throated Green Warblers along with Northern Parula, several Black-and-White Warblers plus the usual Palms & Yellow-rumps. Nothing, and I mean nothing, was seen at the Loop Road Environmental Center & Tamarind Hammock area near Pinecrest.
Shark Valley yielded a half-dozen Purple Gallinules and more waders than I've ever seen there. There were several very cooperative Snail Kites at the Abandoned airboat Ride place across from the Everglades Tower Inn.
A fleeting American Bittern and a Bald Eagle with an American Coot in its talons were highlights in the freshwater pools about 2 miles west of SR29 on USRte41.
Flocks of American White Pelicans were on the sandbar out in Chokoloskee Bay from the Smallwood Store in Chokoloskee.
A Great Horned Owl oogled us from a pine perch, 50 feet off of Fritchey Rd. in Naples and a Limpkin was seen opposite these wetlands on US Rte. 41.
Two or more Bronzed Cowbirds are at Eagle Lakes Park in Naples. Look in the rush to the right of the gazebo.
