For reasons not yet clear, Smooth-billed Anis seem to be disappearing from Florida. Until recently, a reliable spot was the south side of Ft. Lauderdale International Airport. They seem to have disappeared from that location. Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge is also no longer reliable, though the Lox Road access area at the southern end of the refuge may still have anis. Your best bet may be Holey Land Road in Holey Land Wildlife Management Area, west of US 27 in southern Palm Beach County, or other roads along canals in the Everglades Agricultural Area, south of Lake Okeechobee.
: I haven't had any luck locating Smooth-billed Anis near the Homestead Outlet Mall. Can anyone provide an alternate location likely to have them, or tips on refining my search technique? I am pretty clear on the visuals, but have only read descriptions of their song. I have been there morning, noon, and near sunset with the same negative results. Thanks.
