: Really the only way I've been able to tell these two apart is by taste. When you bite into a ruby-throated you KNOW it's a ruby-throated. It's got more of a smoky flavor, and it's texture is not a stringy as the black-chinned. Also, since the ruby-throated's wings are INDEED shorter, it makes swallowing that much easier....
