Red-cockaded Woodpecker is very habitat-specific. Though the closest suitable habitat, namely mature pine flatwoods,is only a few miles north of Marco Island, at Picayune Strand State Forest, it's unlikely that this species would wander to a residential area on a coastal island. Is it possible that what you saw was another woodpecker species? The three most likely candidates would be Red-bellied Woodpecker, Downy Woodpecker or Yellow-bellied Sapsucker.
